Thursday, March 6

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden light. (Matthew 11:29-30)

I believe this message speaks to us from the living God of unconditional love, peace and justice, hope and forgiveness, attitude and service.

The Promise as told us in Mathew 11, resonates with me from my life experience. I grew up in a farming community in the mid-west. I remember, as a child, watching horses and, back then even oxen, struggling with the yoke on their shoulders pulling the plows, turning the rich, heavy soil each Spring. As I “plow” through life, with so many insecurities, fears, doubts, and angers, I want to strive for the promise given in Matthew’s gospel.

No spiritual ritual or dogma has helped me find “rest” for my soul. What helps me most is incorporating into each day the lessons I have been taught and hopefully learned through my life experiences; the love and support of parents and others on my journey, the beauty and appreciation of God’s creation here on the Outer Banks brought to us now from everywhere through amazing images, the energy and wonder of youth, and the good works of so many offering hope for tomorrow. It requires of me a daily exercise of prayer, service, appreciation, and wonder.

What does Resurrection mean to me? It is the opportunity that each new day brings to be open to God’s Spirit as we strive to follow his instructions to realize the promise of rest for our soul.
