Prayer
I’ve been running
Running, racing, chasing
Frantically looking for You.
My breathing is harsh,
My pulse is quickened
“Where are You?” I cry
“Where can I find you?”
My feet keep pounding pavement
Until finally, I collapse.
My legs lie still
My eyes close
Ever so slowly my breathing settles
My pulse retreats back beneath my skin
“Please,” I whisper
“Please come help me”
And suddenly, You are there.
In silence, You bring water to my lips
And wipe the hair away from my brow
Gently, your guiding hand helps me to my feet
“Where were you?” I ask
“Where were you when I first called?”
“My child,” You reply, gazing with piercing eyes,
“I was with you all along”
“But how was I to know?” I object
“Never once did I hear your voice
”I was calling back to you,” You answer,
“and waiting for you to listen.”
