                                     Reflections on Prayer

I touch the head of a newborn child, so soft and tender, not fully formed.

I ask God for blessings on this new life and on her parents who have loved
     her from her first breath.

The couple happily holds hands as they promise to love one another forever.

I pray that God will be with them as they continue together, to keep alive in
them the commitment they made this day.

He lies unresponsive in a hospital Emergency Room. His parents hover over his bed anxious and frightened. He could be taken from them.

I beg God to heal this small being and to comfort those who love him, to let
them know He, God, is there in that place.

“IS Confirms Execution of Japanese Hostage Haruna Yukawa” reads the headline on the Yahoo! News website.

I ask God not for understanding but for mercy for those responsible. In
sorrow for the family, I pray that God will console and bring peace to those
     who lost a family member.

The sun blazes red-orange amid dark clouds as it lingers just over the horizon. Then slowly it dips lower until the last thin slice disappears leaving just a deepening night.

I thank God for the beauty I see around me, beauty He created. His power
and majesty surround me. I live in awe on my earth home.

Prayer, in its many forms, is our attempt to communicate with the mystery that is God. Whether spoken or not, danced or sung, prayer is our spiritual voice.
