and the teachers of the law came together. Peter followed Him at a
distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with
the guards and warmed himself at the fire. (Mark 14: 53-54)
What was Peter thinking? How did he feel? The guards had just taken
away his leader. It's the middle of the night. It's cold. Jesus is about
to be judged. Are His followers next? Peter is undoubtedly confused
and uncertain. He has doubts about his teacher, the man he's been
following. He's afraid of what will happen. He's afraid for himself.
Haven't we all been in that place. We are afraid. We are confused.
We have doubts. We can't see straight. We don't know what's to
come. It's a scary place to be. It all stems from a future we don't
know and cannot see. For Peter, it was the horror and then the glory.
The dark and then the light. For us, it is facing our fears, our
uncertainties, our confusion and doubts. It is understanding that we
don't have all the answers. We cannot see into the future. We cannot
be certain what will happen. We are only human.
We can, however, trust in God. Take life with all of its uncertainties
one step, one hour, one day at a time. Trust that God will be with us
every step, every hour, every day. Trust that no matter what - the
dark, the cold, the fears - God is there. It's not an easy path, but it is
the only one. Pray to God. Trust in God. Be in God.
